[ Famous People of Kumamoto]

1.Akemi Matsuno

Akemi Matsuno is a former marathon runner and now TV performer. She belongs to NikoNiko Do. Unfortunately, she is most famous because she did not qualify for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She is now married to a man who is her manager and is also from Kumamoto. They have two children. She also has a talent of mimicry. She is very unique and funny, she often appears on lots of variety shows.

2.Cream stew

Cream shew is a famous entertainer. The group consists of two menbers, One is Shinya Ueda the other is Teppei Arita. Both of them graduated from Seisei high school.Originally, this name isn't cream shityu. At first, they was sold as "Kaijarisuigyo". Now, they work some programs such as All night Nippon, Zubari yuwayo, Cream nanntoka and so on. They also appeared in Kumamoto's CM. Now they appear the CM " Hakutake Shiro".

3.Hiroshi

Hiroshi is a famous entertainer. Actually, he had been worked at Host club for 3 years and then he became entertainer again.The stage name of Hiroshi comes from "Hiroshi Ikushima" who is the TV announcer. However, his real name is Kenichi Saito.When he performs, he always says "Hiroshi desu." For everyone, this word is very funny and interesting.

4.Korroke

Korroke is a famous mimic star. He was born in Kumamoto city. He graduated from Kaishin high school. When he appeared on a mimicTV show and won the grand prize, he became popular. In the 1980s he mimiced Kenichi Mikawa who was not popular then. Thanks for it, Mikawa became popular again. Korroke and Mikawa appeared in the NHK Year-end Grand Song Festival together. He mainly mimics Shinichi Mori, Hiroshi Itsuki, Saburo Kitajima and so on. His older sister is a mimic star,too and her screen name is Kerroke.

5.Shingo Suetsugu

Shingo Suetsugu is the fastest sprinter in Japan. He also got a bronze medal of World Championship in Paris 2003 as the first sprinter in Japan. Now, he belongs to Mizuno. He graduated from Kyushu gakuin high school and Tokai university. His parents wprk here as barber. In August 2007, he entered in the World Championship in Osaka as the menbers of team Japan and sat up a Asia new record. Today,he's practicing hard for the Olympic in Beijing.

[ Famous places of Kumamoto]

1.Kumamoto Castle

The first thing people think about when they think about Kumamoto is Kumamoto castle. With the 400th anniversary of the castle, visitors, many of them from foreign countries, have been coming to Kumamoto to see the castle.There are some parks in this area. Ninomaru-park, for example, is vast and you can see the castle well from it. In spring, the cherry blossoms are their best and you can see many people enjoy Hanami there. This year,2007, is the 400th anniversary of Kumamoto castle, that's why there are many events like the aerial acrobatics, Brass band musics and so on. Try to visit Kumamoto castle at least once!

2.Suizenji Park

Suizenji Park is near Kokufu High school and it is a famous place in Kumamoto. The most famaus garden in it is Suizenjijyoujyuen. Before about 360 years, Tadatoshi Hosokawa was made the garden.In the garden, there is a springwater and have been flown pure water, so many tourists visit for sightseeing. There are some events like Takigino and Yabusame in a year. admission to the park is 400 yen for adults and 200 yen for children. It is good place to enjoy seeing Japanese classic garden!!

3.Mt. Aso

Mt.Aso is located in the east of Kumamoto and have the largest caldera in the world. It is a simbol of Kumamoto and is popular with many people. If you visit Aso, you should go to Cuddly Dominion. There you can see several bears and other animals, and touch some of them. You also can meet Tv star chimpanzee, Pan kun there.When the volcanic activity quit, we can see crater nearby. There is also Aso National Park. There are so many leisure spots and lots of people go there.

4.Kikuchikeikoku

Kikuchikeikoku is one of the famous place of Kumamoto. The vally is the source of Kukuma river in north of Kumamoto.This water is selected by the famous water in Japan. When it comes to Summer, people go to there becasue this place is cool.Every year in April, about 30～４０ ten thousands of people visit there.

5.Tsuruya

Tsuruya is the largest local department store in Kumamoto. This year, Tsuruya became 55 years and is loved by Kumamoto people. Basically, Tsuruya consists of the main building and east building. However, there are New-S, WING-Ⅱ, NEXTSTAGE and Brooks Brothers near it. Tsuruya has a original song and it can listen to this song from the RKK radio program. Tsuruya was also a sponsor of Rosso Kumamoto.When it comes to Chiristmas season, it is illuminated and brightened around the street.

[ Specialties of Kumamoto]

1. Basashi (Horse Sashimi)

Do you know "Basashi(Horse Sashimi)" ? It is one of the most famous specialties of Kumamoto. As you can see the word "Sashimi", we eat it with it uncooked. It is a horse meat, but, of course, we don't fly it at all.It is eaten in Kumamoto, Nagano, Yamanashi, and Tohoku section, but Kumamoto is known as the best place to eat it. The history of Basashi came from around 1592 to 1593. At that time, the army of Kiyomasa Kato started to eat Basashi because they were lacking of food. We recommend you to eat it once!

2. Tai-Pi-En

Tai-Pi-En is originally a Chinese food which is recreated in Japan. The original one came from Fujian, China at the age of Meji. It is like ramen and many ramen restaurants serve it commonly, so it is said that some Kumamoto people think it is served everywhere in Japan. There are several varieties of soup just like Ramen. It contains sping vermicelli, shrimp, cuttlefish, pork and something like that. By the way, it is called "Tai-Pin-En" differently and only some restaurants serve.

3. Corn Sponge Cake

In Aso city, you can buy a funny sponge cake named "Corn Sponge Cake" (Tomorokoshi Kasutera in Japanese). This sponge cake contains a lot of corn, which is made there. You can't find it anywhere else, it is sold only at the top of Mt. Aso. If you visit Aso, how about trying it?

4. Dekopon

"Dekopon" is a kind of citrus, which Kumamoto produces almost half of the quantity of output. It can be peeled easily and you can eat it with its peel. In addition, it has a high suger content and its tast is very good, which is why many people prefer it. "Dekopon" is kind of a brand of citrus and producers must clear some conditions to give their products the brand name. By the way, at first, Dekopon was originally Kumamoto-held.

5. Karashi Renkon

Karashi Renkon is a lotus root filled with a lot of mustard, which was formed in Kumamoto. This is very popular among Kumamoto people. However, unfortunately there was an incident which it has something to do with. In 1984 36 people was poisoned and 11 of them died because of Karashi Renkon.

I am Ayumi and 40 years old now. I live with my family in abroad.
My husband is a foreigner and our children are half and half. We live in big house with big yard and have some pets. I am a housewife, but sometimes work as a Japanese teacher. My husband is a hard worker and loves us a lot. I have three children. My children have both Japanese and English names and can speak both English and Japanese. One of my pets is dog. His name is Cody. We like him very much and often go to park with him. He is very clever and brings newspaper every morning. My husband and I have recorded our children’s growth on home video since they were babies. We go to a church every Sunday and sometimes enjoy barbecue in our yard. We like house parties, so we hold house parties and invite friends in our house. We also like to travel somewhere and our favorite spot is Disneyland in California. We visit Japan once every year to see my parents. My parents can’t speak English well, but my husband and children can talk with them in Japanese. It is no problem for them to communicate. We invite my sister or friends’ children from Japan into our house during summer to make them do home stay. We take them anywhere they want to go by our car. We hope they get good memories in their mind. My husband is really nice and kind man, so he never forgets our wedding anniversary. We sometimes go to date without our children and eat dinner in a restaurant. He helps our children do their homework and likes to play sports with them. Our children are sometimes good but sometimes not. When they do something bad, we get angry with them. We never use violence and we just lecture them to make them think about themselves. We often go shopping in a mall together every weekend by our car. We sometimes eat lunch there and buy many things to live. The youngest child is easy to be lost, so I order the oldest children to watch him. There is also a theater in the mall, so when we are free, we watch movie together.
We try to stay together the most time as possible as. We always share the happiness a lot. We keep good family ship.

The worst day in my life

The worst day in my life was a day when centipede bit me.
That day I finished my dinner before 6pm. There was an exclusive ice cream in my refrigerator. I was looking forward to eating it, so I tried to go to a kitchen. Then I felt a big pain in my right foot. My foot hurt very much, so I cried and my mother realized what was happened. I thought a piece of glass stuck my foot. The moment I moved my foot in a hurry, my mother and I saw a big black centipede. It was very eerie for us. I hurried to wash my foot, but the pain still lasted. We didn’t know about centipede’s poison, so we got into a panic. I saw two traces centipede bit, and it made me unease. I was afraid that I had to cut off my foot. My sister called on a hospital and then ambulance came. I rode ambulance with my sister. Though my foot hurt very much, the emergency services didn’t care me so much and began to some questions. They might believe that I was a not serious patient. We went to a hospital near my house, so I could receive treatment soon. It was very hell for me. Two nurses stuck needle my foot to clear the centipede poison. I managed to bear it, but I felt like crying. My sister couldn’t watch that sight, so she went to anywhere then. And to make matter worse, I had to have a big injection. One nurse tried to inject into my left arm, only to fail. So she tried to do it with my right arm again. I wanted to get angry with her, but I said nothing and still bore that pang. My father came to the hospital by car and then we went back to home. Though I received treatment at the hospital, the pang still lasted. My mother studied the centipede poison from Internet and told me about that. According to the Internet site, centipedes damage our nerves and the pain for their poisons last for 48 hours. The moment I heard it, I was a little shocked, because I had to bear that pain for a long time. I also felt easy, because my life was in no danger. At the rest of that day, I kept enduring that pain and drank medicine. The next day, my pain decreased and disappeared without notice. Anyway, I became a phobia about centipede and never want to meet this tragedy any longer. It was very bad day for me.

A memorable day in my life

A memorable day in my life is a high school festival day in 2003.
When I was a freshman at the high school, my classmates and I sang “I will follow him” at a stage on school festival day. My high school was Christian and our homeroom teacher taught us English, so we decided to sing it in English. But we had to study very hard everyday, and we did not have much time to practice singing. We all watched the movie “Sister act “and listened this song so many times. We almost had to study from 7:30am to 6pm a day. So we began to practice singing after the classes. I was not good at singing. In those days I liked English, but it was difficult to understand this song’s meaning and memorize this lyric. I also had a question about him that is a part of this song’s title. Then I did not know who he is. So I tried to do my best to overcome these programs. To make matters worse, I had to sing with dance in the center of the stage. I could not dance well, too. I really worried about it. Especially, I did not like dance class in high school days. My classmates cared me and taught me so many times, but I could not improve it at all. I also practiced it repeatedly at my home. The day came soon. I was very nervous before my stage. I watched another classes’ stages before my stage, but I could not enjoy watching them. My stage began at last. I really wanted to run away. My mind went blank as soon as the song began, but I managed to move my mouth. This song is gospel, so I decided to enjoy singing and dancing even if I mistook. My friend enjoyed them next to me. She was a wheelchair user, but very cheerful. Then I expected every audience looked at her not me. Some audiences began to dance together. My feeling became better. I enjoyed singing and dancing with all my might. Our show finished in no time and everyone applauded. So I was very happy and relaxed. I still believe my class was the best of all. And I enjoyed the rest of the festival with my friends. My sister visited my school to see me after my stage. There she happened to meet a photographer and she was taken photo with other students. To my surprised, she largely appeared in the next day’s newspaper. She though he was a just school photographer. It turned out that he was a journalist later. My family was delighted to know it.
I had experienced three school festivals, but this festival was the best for me. Then I was crazy about gospel and sometimes listen gospel songs now. I want to see my classmates again. When I will see them someday, some of them will have their children.

My favorite animal

I had some pets when I was a young. There were chickens, rabbits, fishes, and birds and so on in my family. Especially, I have a lot of memories about chickens.
When I was ten years old, my father bought two female chicks at a home center. They looked very cute. I named them from my favorite game’s characters. One chick was Bianca and the other was Flour. My neighbor had cats, so cats often aimed them. My family caged in them to save from cats. Thanks for it, they managed to escape cat’s risk. The more they grew, the stronger they became. And I thought they became white chickens, but they became brown chickens. My family began to keep them in our yard. They walked freely in the yard. So they went out of our yard and visited others’ houses. They were enough smart to come back to my home every evening. To my surprised, they sometimes kicked cats and deprived cats of cats’ food. Because they were female chickens, they laid eggs every morning. We could eat fresh eggs for free. I was sure that their eggs were much better than super markets’. One day, I tried to feed sunny-side up eggs to them. Then they became crazy about it. If I had showed it, they dashed to eat. Many people think chickens like earthworm. But I believed myself that chickens like sunny-side up eggs than earthworm. Another day, one missing male bantam visited my house to see my chickens and cried every morning. We were always busy driving him from them. They had never loyal sentiment for us like dogs. But they were very strong and easy to keep. They did not frighten anything. We had a lot of rabbits before, but some of them died soon. I thought we kept them for a long time. Suddenly, sad day when I had to break with them came. My father’s friend wanted to get them and my parents gave him them. I resisted my parents and cried. But it was no use resisting. At last, I agreed that I gave them to him. My mother bought me two books instead. I had never seen them since that day. Unfortunately, I heard bad news later. According to his friend, weasels ate my chickens at his house. I could not believe that story and felt painful.
My dream is to remove to foreign country and there I want to have bogs and chickens again.

My precious thing

My precious thing is a piece of paper from my friend. Maybe, other people think it is just a litter. It is very precious for me. His e-mail adress is written on this paper. I got it last July. I will tell why it is precious.
My friend was a foreign student from U.K. I met him through the Joyful English which is a school activity. I like an exchange cultures very much. So I was looking for programs which foreign students attend before I entered this university. I have never got foreign friend in my life. I tried to attend many programs to see and talk with foreign students in English. But in fact most of the foreign students did not remember my name except for him. He was easy person for me to talk. So when he called my name, I was very glad. My friends felt a little jealous to me. One day, he said to me that he would teach me German and then we decided to meet at the library every Friday. I was very lucky that I could learn German and English from him for free. I didn’t tell that fact to my friends and kept secret even my family. In fact, we met there and just enjoyed chatting. But he sometimes taught me pronunciation of German. And I taught him Japanese culture. I sometimes made him read Japanese comics and he asked me what he did not understand. Every times he asked me, I explained them in easy Japanese. Then I was a Japanese teacher for him.
It was nice time for me. It was me among my friends that the only person could get a chance to talk with a foreign student. Unfortunately, he had to go back to own country soon. We didn’t have much time to talk. So he suggested that we keep in touch after he leaves Japan. So we exchanged our e-mail addresses. He wrote his address to a note. He was a first foreign and male friend for me. I decided to keep it in my pencil box not to lose. Recently, I sent a mail to him through Hotmail and he sent me his answer. I was glad that he still remembered me. Now I keep it and never lose it.

Japanese family Ayumi

Hello, my name is Ayumi Tsumori. I study English at the Kumamoto Gakuen University. Now my English skill is poor, so I want to improve it in America. I like to exchange culture.
So I often attend many programs which foreign students come and have a lot of foreign friends. I also like drawing pictures. At the university, I belong to the cartoon club. There I draw anything. When I was a high school student, I went to Australia for a school trip. I stayed there only four days. But I could enjoy staying on farm. Now I am looking forward to seeing you. I long for an American life style very much because I’ve seen American movies. Especially, I like the movie”Home alone ”. If I am in America, I want to feel the difference from America life style to Japanese. My dream is to remove in abroad in the future, and there I want to be a Japanese teacher. I want to teach not only Japanese but also Japanese culture. I hear there are many races in America. I want to get many friends and learn many languages from them.
