Book Review 2-15

I read the book “A Pretty Face”. I will review this story.
Zoe was seventeen years. She worked in a bookstore in the little town of Newport. Zoe liked books and her works. But after work, she liked to act in plays with the Newport Player. The Newport Players did six plays every year, and Zoe was in most of them. Some plays were exciting and famous. That week, the play was Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.

Mike was eighteen years old. He was a student at Newport College, and he liked writing. One day, he wanted to be famous and write plays for the theater and television.
Newport had a newspaper. Its editor was Mike’s aunt. One morning, Mike’s aunt, Peggy asked him to write a review of Romeo and Juliet for the newspaper. Mike agreed it. That evening, he went to Newport’s Little Theater to see the play. Mike was ready to write notes for his review. Five minutes later, the play began. Zoe acted the part of Juliet’s mother. She knew all her words and spoke them well. He thought she was pretty and doing her best. He began to write about her in his notebook. Two hours later, the play ended and the audience left the theater. Mike went home and wrote his review for the newspaper. He was not good feeling. He wanted to be kind, but he thought he should be honest.
His review was that Zoe Baker was a young girl in an older woman’s costume, and she could never him believe differently.

When she saw the news page, she got angry. She checked the name of the writer. On Thursday evening the next week, Zoe and her friend Annie were drinking coffee in the Newport Café. Annie was a student at Newport College and sometimes they met at the café. Suddenly, Zoe saw a boy sitting at a table across the room. She asked Annie about his name. She got known his name and, he was the same person with the writer of the review. She was furious. She remembered what he wrote on the newspaper. She tried to bitch to him, but she did not do that. She had a good idea instead of it.

On Thursday, Mike came to the Newport Café after his writing class. He asked for a cup of coffee, and then stared to read one of his books. Some minutes later, a woman came into the café. She was carrying a magazine under her arm. She greeted and smiled at Mike. She sat in front of him and began to introduce herself. She said that she was the editor of Yes! Magazine. He knew it was a magazine about famous people. She asked him to write something for it. Mike asked her the reason why she wanted him to do. She said that it was because he had written theater reviews for the Newport weekly newspaper. She said she wanted him to write about a famous playwright in Newport. He thought if he did the job, he should write about Todd Marin, who was the only famous playwright in Newport. Todd Marin was famous for not talking to reporters from gossip magazine. He threw them out of his house. He thought it was really difficult work, but finally he agreed it.

Later that evening, Zoe was talking to Annie on the phone. She told her about her plan. It was she would stand outside Todd Marin’s house and watch Todd Marin throw Mike Morrison out.

The next morning, Mike went to Todd Marin’s house. It was a big house, and there were lots of bushes and tall trees in front of it. He did not like Yes! Magazine very much, but he thought it was an important interview. He walked up to the front door of the house. He was carrying his notebook and he had a list of questions to ask the playwright. But he was a little afraid of the famous man. Zoe followed Mike to Todd Marin’s house. Zoe was acting the part of Kate Lawson again. She had a black wig over her hair and was wearing glasses. She hid behind one of the bushes in front of Todd Marin’s house. When Todd Marin opened the door of his house, Mike began to talk quickly. Todd Marin did not like the Yes! Magazine, but he welcomed Mike into his house. Zoe could see them, but she could not hear them speaking. She just waited for Todd Marin to throw him out. Todd Marin took Mike to his study. There were hundreds of books in the room, and a big desk. Todd Marin thanked for him to tell the truth. He thought Mike was an honest young man. Mike could ask him his questions, but it was not for Yes! Magazine. Todd allowed him to ask his question if it was for the Newport Weekly News. In fact, Todd Marin read Mike’s reviews in the newspaper, so he liked his reviews. Mike wanted to write for the theater, for TV and for movies. Todd Marin sat back in his chair to listen and Mike told him the plot of his play. Mike was very nervous, but Todd Marin did not speak. He smiled at Mike and he listened to him very carefully. When at last Mike stopped speaking, Todd advised him about his reviews to make it better. Zoe stayed behind the bush and waited. An hour went by and nothing happened. She was getting impatient. She thought Todd Marin never gave interviews to gossip magazine.

After an hour and a half, Mike Morrison left Todd Marin’s study and came out of the house. He and the playwright were smiling. They talked for two or three minutes and Zoe watched them from behind the bush, and it made her amazed. After a minute or two more, they shook hands. Then Todd Marin went back into the house and Mike Morrison walked away. Mike saw Kate waiting for him. He was surprised to see her so soon. Mike did not tell a lie, so he said the truth. He said that he reported for the Newport Weekly New, so not for Yes! Magazine. He also learned about writing plays from him because he wanted to write a play for TV. Todd Marin helped him with the characters and the plot. Mike apologized to her for not having interviewed for her magazine. However, she said that she was not angry. She began to something very strange. She took off her hair and her glasses. At that time, he knew who she was. She was not Kate Lawson, editor of Yes! Magazine, and in fact she was that young actress. He was surprised and smiled at her. She told him about her feeling for his review of her. Mike felt embarrassed. She asked him whether she was a good actress or not. He finally recognized that she was a good actress. He told her that he would put that in the Newport Weekly News. He also thanked her for making him go and see Todd Marin. He did not feel embarrassed any more. He suggested to her that they should get a cup of coffee. She could not refuse a free coffee!!

At the end of the story, Mike and Zoe were reading the newspaper about Todd Marin and Zoe written by Mike.

The main characters of this book were handsome and cute. That’s why I can enjoy reading it. However, speaking of the story, I do not like it. If I were Mike, I would never forgive what Zoe was doing even if she was so cute and pretty. I guess they became lovers later because they were good looking each other. I think everything in this story went well. I believe can be difficult. I hope my life goes well like this in the future. Anyway, this story was so-so long and boring, but it was easy to understand. I will find better books than this next time!!
